Russia will suspend gas supplies to Armenia for 10 days
Natural gas supplies from Russia to Armenia will be temporarily suspended for 10 days. “Gazprom Armenia” attributed this to scheduled preventive maintenance and repair work on the “North Caucasus–Transcaucasia” gas pipeline on Russian territory. The company assures that consumers in Armenia will not be left without gas.
Natural gas supplies from Russia to Armenia will be temporarily suspended for 10 days. The restriction will be in effect from September 15 to 25. This was reported by Gazprom Armenia, a subsidiary of Russia’s Gazprom.
The reason cited is scheduled maintenance and repair work on the “North Caucasus–Transcaucasia” main gas pipeline. The work will take place on Russian territory. “Due to comprehensive scheduled maintenance and repair work on the ‘North Caucasus – Transcaucasia” on Russian territory, natural gas supplies to Armenia via this pipeline will be temporarily suspended from September 15 to 25,” according to a statement from “Gazprom Armenia.”
Will Armenia Be Left Without Gas?
Despite the halt in Russian supplies, Armenian authorities promise to maintain uninterrupted gas supply to consumers. The country plans to use its own gas reserves during the repair period. In addition, Armenia will increase its use of natural gas supplied from Iran. “Gazprom Armenia” stated that consumers in the republic should not experience any restrictions due to the temporary suspension of supplies from Russia.
Thus, Russian gas will be replaced during this period by domestic reserves and additional volumes of Iranian gas. This will allow the gas supply system to continue operating even while the Russian section of the pipeline is under repair.
What’s Happening with the Russian Gas Pipeline
The “North Caucasus–Transcaucasus” gas pipeline is one of the routes through which Russian gas is delivered to Armenia. Technical work is regularly carried out on it to inspect the condition of the pipeline and ensure its continued operation. This time, the repairs will last ten days. During this period, gas transportation to Armenia via this route will be completely suspended.
Armenia, however, expects to compensate for the shortage of Russian gas with other sources. In particular, the country has the option of receiving gas from Iran. Tehran has been supplying natural gas to Armenia for many years as part of bilateral energy cooperation. Therefore, according to “Gazprom Armenia,” the temporary suspension of the Russian route should not lead to disruptions for residents or businesses. Russian gas supplies are expected to resume after the completion of scheduled maintenance and repair work on September 25, according to News.am.
