Russia is reviving old plans to strike NATO and exploring the possibility of escalation

Russia is once again revisiting previously developed plans for potential attacks on NATO countries and exploring scenarios for military escalation.

According to him, amid difficulties in the war against Ukraine and internal pressure within the Kremlin, Moscow may be considering options for limited strikes or provocations against European NATO members, particularly the Baltic states or Poland.

Former CIA Director William Burns also stated that the risk of further escalation remains real and could increase due to the challenges facing the Russian leadership.

At the same time, Western intelligence agencies have not detected any immediate preparations by Russia for a large-scale invasion—specifically, the movement of troops toward NATO borders. However, according to the publication’s sources, Moscow is reportedly analyzing and updating old military scenarios regarding potential targets within NATO member states.

Analysts note that Russia may rely on hybrid operations, cyberattacks, or limited provocations to test NATO’s readiness to respond. Meanwhile, Europe is discussing possible options for responding to potential threats.

Gerard Baker, editor of The Wall Street Journal, specifically addressed the growing risk of a Russian attack on one of the NATO countries. According to him, following conversations with European politicians, military officials, and intelligence representatives, he considers such a scenario increasingly likely.

These reports came amid the annual NATO summit, as well as warnings from some European intelligence agencies about possible Russian provocations against the Baltic states and Poland.

This was reported by The Washington Post columnist David Ignatius, citing Western officials.
