Russia expels a British embassy employee for "espionage"

The Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation announced the expulsion of Yansse Gerardus, Second Secretary of the British Embassy in Moscow.

The Russian side accused the foreign representative of conducting intelligence activities that allegedly threaten the national security of the aggressor country.

The occupying forces’ security agencies claim to have documented the diplomat’s attempts to obtain “sensitive information” during informal meetings with Russian economic experts.

In connection with this, Gerardus was stripped of his accreditation and ordered to leave Russian territory within the next two weeks.

“The Russian FSB has detected signs of intelligence and subversive activities by the aforementioned diplomat that threaten the security of the Russian Federation. Attempts to obtain sensitive information during informal meetings with Russian economic experts have also been documented,” the agency’s statement reads.

In addition to espionage, the Russian intelligence service accuses the British diplomat of providing false information when applying for a visa.

This is not the first such case: in mid-January 2026, Moscow had already revoked the accreditation of another British embassy employee on similar suspicions.

The British Foreign Office is currently refraining from making official comments on this latest diplomatic scandal.

Analysts view these actions by the Kremlin as an attempt to further isolate the country and intimidate Western representatives working in the Russian capital.

As a reminder, the FSB uses state space projects to embezzle budget funds.

Additionally, an FSB agent received a 15-year sentence for planning strikes on airfields in western Ukraine.
