A Russian frigate conducted artillery firing off the coast of Britain
The Russian frigate *Neustrashimy* conducted artillery drills approximately 40 nautical miles, or about 74 kilometers, south of Plymouth in the United Kingdom. The ship from Russia—an aggressor state—was monitored by the British Royal Navy patrol ship HMS Tyne.
Before the firing began, the Russian ship notified HMS Tyne of its intention to conduct artillery drills and asked the British vessel to move to a safer distance. HMS Tyne then changed its position. The exercises lasted about 30 minutes and took place in international waters.
A spokesperson for the British Ministry of Defense stated that the Royal Navy monitored the exercises and continues to “closely track the vessel’s activities.”
According to the BBC, a French military aircraft was also monitoring the Neustrashimy. Its crew established radio contact with the frigate and asked the Russian side to clarify its intentions.
The incident occurred amid increased activity by the Russian Navy near British waters in recent months. In June, the British Ministry of Defense investigated reports that a Russian frigate had fired warning shots near a yacht in the English Channel that had approached the ship.
