Rostelecom has developed a system for remotely managing subscribers' routers

The Russian telecommunications operator Rostelecom has submitted an application to the Russian Ministry of Digital Development to include a new system called "Leshy Connect" in the register of domestic software. It is designed for remote monitoring and control of users' home routers and modems.

According to Russian media reports, the system allows the operator to update device firmware, diagnose equipment, and automatically configure internet and IPTV services without any involvement from subscribers.

The company explains the project’s name as a reference to Slavic mythology. Rostelecom stated: “Leshy was considered the master of the forest who kept order. To draw an analogy, just as a forest must maintain stability and the ability to regenerate, so too do customer devices require regular updates, maintenance, and protection against threats.”

The company’s vice president, Vitaly Trepakhalin, explained that the system is designed to provide centralized monitoring of subscribers’ equipment status and timely software updates without intervention from users or technical staff. According to him, Rostelecom plans to bring up to 50% of subscriber devices under the new system’s management by 2026, and approximately 7 million devices by 2027.
