Rubio supports deepening US ties with Oman

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone call with Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi on September 15 and expressed support for deepening ties between Washington and Muscat. The National reports.

Oman’s role in de-escalation

During the conversation, Rubio acknowledged Oman’s important role in de-escalating the situation in the region and condemned recent Iranian attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

US State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said that Rubio supported deepening relations between Oman and the United States. The secretary of state also reiterated the US commitment to preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and ensuring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump’s previous threats

The conversation took place less than a month after US President Donald Trump threatened to bomb Oman amid Muscat’s talks with Tehran regarding the Strait of Hormuz. According to the publication, Trump made such threats twice: on August 17 and during a cabinet meeting in May.

For decades, Oman has maintained a reputation as one of the key diplomatic mediators in the Middle East. The country has a long-standing strategic partnership with the United States while also maintaining close ties with Iran.
