Romania has begun a complete shutdown of its only nuclear power plant, Cernavodă, due to record-low water levels in the Danube, which is used to cool the facility. This was reported by the national nuclear energy company Nuclearelectrica, according to The Guardian.
Last month, the company had already shut down one of the plant’s two reactors. According to AFP, the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant typically generates about one-fifth of Romania’s total electricity. The decision to shut down the second reactor was made due to a “significant and persistent” drop in the Danube’s water level.
Before completely shutting down the plant, measures were taken to divert more water to the facility. Specifically, a rock was blasted in the riverbed, and four barges filled with rocks were sunk.

Amid the heatwave, temperatures exceeding 40°C were forecast in some regions of Spain, while London and Paris were expected to reach up to 38°C. In France, an orange heat warning was issued in 80 departments, while a yellow heat warning was in effect across much of the United Kingdom.
According to the PA, following a record-dry July and a dry start to August, nearly three-quarters of England and all of Wales are suffering from drought. England and Wales have also recorded as many wildfires since the start of the year as they did in all of 2025.
