Romania shot down a drone over its territory for the third time in three days

On the morning of July 26, the Romanian Air Force shot down a drone over the country’s territorial waters in the Sulina–Kilia area. This is the third such incident in the last three days, Romanian President Nicușor Dan said.

According to him, at 10:13 a.m., the drone was shot down by an F-16 fighter jet of the Romanian Air Force. The president thanked the pilots and ground crews for their professionalism, courage, and effective execution of their missions.

According to “European Truth,” the Romanian General Prosecutor’s Office has determined that the drone shot down on Friday morning was a “Shahed”-type drone, which the Russian Federation—the aggressor state—is using in the war against Ukraine. Investigations into the drones shot down on Saturday and Sunday are ongoing.

Dan stated that Romania’s diplomatic protest to Russia will be based on the results of these investigations. He emphasized that the violation of Romania’s airspace—which is also NATO and European Union airspace—is unacceptable.

Earlier, the Romanian president reported that on July 25, at approximately 8:30 a.m. local time, a drone was shot down 10 kilometers west of the city of Sfântu Gheorghe. The country’s Ministry of Defense clarified that it was destroyed by the same pilot who, the day before, had shot down another drone that had flown deep into Romanian territory.
