Romania imposes emergency energy regulations as Moldova reopens LUKOIL fuel stations

The Romanian government has approved a decree establishing a state of emergency in the energy sector from 1 April to 30 June, limiting fuel markups and exports. This period may be extended if crisis conditions persist. Concurrently, Moldovan authorities have authorized the use of LUKOIL's existing fuel reserves to resume operations at the company’s previously closed gas stations.

Romania actively exports petrol and diesel, including supplies to Ukraine, and the new restrictions aim to stabilise the domestic market amid ongoing crisis pressures. Meanwhile, in Moldova, the closure of LUKOIL stations and police restrictions on public access have created service disruptions, prompting the government to permit utilisation of stored fuel to reopen fuel stations.

Sergiu Diaconu, head of Moldova’s National Crisis Management Centre, stated that many key LUKOIL petrol station networks across the country remain closed and that police continue to restrict citizen access to the most convenient locations. The reopening is intended to secure fuel availability and prevent shortages.

LUKOIL is a leading oil and gas company in Eastern Europe engaged in exploration, refining, and retail fuel sales. Its extensive network of service stations plays a vital role in supplying fuel to both consumers and industries in the region.

In summary, Romania’s emergency measures combined with Moldova’s decision to restore LUKOIL station operations are aimed at stabilising the energy market, preserving resources, and maintaining uninterrupted fuel supply amid the regional crisis.

Going forward, authorities will likely monitor conditions closely and consider extending these measures depending on how the energy crisis evolves in neighbouring countries.
