Sandu Blamed Russia for the Crash of a Drone in Moldova
Moldovan President Maia Sandu and Prime Minister Vasile Tofan responded to the crash of a combat drone near the village of Krokmaz, close to the Ukrainian border. Sandu called the incident a consequence of Russian aggression and stated that the violation of airspace poses a danger to people in the region.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu condemned the incident involving a combat drone that entered the country’s territory on August 9. She called the incident yet another violation of Moldova’s airspace and linked it to Russia’s war against Ukraine.
According to Sandu, such incidents demonstrate that the consequences of the war are felt not only by those directly involved in the hostilities. The president emphasized that such incidents pose an additional threat to the region’s residents. “This is yet another violation of our airspace and a direct consequence of Russian aggression,” Sandu stated.
She also called for an end to actions that pose a danger to Moldova and its citizens. According to the president, the risk to people in the region is increasing due to such incidents.
Moldova’s Prime Minister Also Responded
Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan also commented on the incident. He first thanked the police, rescue workers, firefighters, and other emergency services who responded to the scene.
Tofan noted that the drone crashed into a tree rather than a residential building. Thanks to this, casualties were avoided. “There were no casualties, and the fire was quickly extinguished. I thank our police and emergency response teams, who promptly contained the fire,” the prime minister said.
He also stated that the war is already being felt directly in Moldova. “We are all feeling the effects of this war. We know who the aggressor is. I condemn this war. It affects us, too,” Tofan emphasized.
The prime minister added that he wants the war to end as soon as possible. “All I want is for it to end as soon as possible,” he said.
What’s Next
Following the incident, law enforcement officers and bomb disposal experts worked at the scene. Specialists are to conduct a technical examination of the debris found to definitively determine the origin and characteristics of the drone.
Meanwhile, Moldovan authorities have already issued a political assessment of the incident. The country’s president directly linked it to Russian aggression and emphasized that the war poses a threat to neighboring states as well. At the same time, no one was injured as a result of the incident. Rescue workers quickly extinguished the fire that broke out after the drone crashed. For Chisinau, this incident served as yet another warning that the war in neighboring Ukraine could pose risks to Moldovan territory as well. This was reported by NewsMaker.
