Chisi village in China becomes a cultural tourism destination — ECNS
Chisi village in the city of Beihai in southern China, which previously had official status as a poor village, has become a cultural tourism destination after two years of cooperation with artists from the Academy of Arts and Design at Tsinghua University. ECNS reports.
Installations and farmland
Two years ago, local authorities invited artists to create works directly in the village. The artists used the features of the local landscape, with its red soil and subtropical vegetation.
Together with residents, they created public art objects from metal frames and hundreds of species of subtropical plants. Materials that had previously been discarded were also used for large outdoor installations. The village combined art objects with farmland and educational trips.

Educational programs and income
Chisi has set up 15 sites for practical classes, including tie-dye fabric dyeing, pottery and baking. They can accommodate up to 1,500 students and visitors at the same time. A newly built nature-themed pavilion features a 5D cinema, an area for making insect houses, a floor curling area and mini-gardening.
According to local officials, more than 90% of households in the village have built new homes and bought cars. One resident, 60-year-old farmer Huang Wenfeng, maintains the installations and teaches participants in educational trips about farming. In 2025, 85,000 people visited Chisi, and revenue exceeded 3 million yuan, or about $420,000. More than half of the collective income came from educational trips.
