The U.S. Senate reached out to Zelenskyy ahead of the vote on sanctions against Russia — The Hill
During his visit to Washington on July 28, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will meet with U.S. senators on the eve of a decisive vote on a bill imposing new restrictive measures against Russia. This refers to a package of so-called “hellish sanctions” aimed at increasing pressure on Moscow.
The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. local time at the Capitol. In Kyiv time, it will begin at 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 29. All 100 U.S. senators have received invitations.
The main topic is expected to be a bill to increase sanctions pressure on Russia and its trading partners due to its ongoing aggression against Ukraine. The bill has bipartisan support in the Senate and was introduced by the late Senator Lindsey Graham.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has endorsed the bill but insists that it include additional sanctions against Iran and Hezbollah.
The Hill notes that over the past few months, U.S. senators have met with Zelenskyy on multiple occasions to discuss continued support for Ukraine and the strengthening of sanctions against Russia. In particular, a large bipartisan delegation held talks with the Ukrainian president during the Munich Security Conference in February of this year.
In addition to meeting with the senators, Zelenskyy will attend a memorial service for Lindsey Graham. He is also scheduled to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday, The Hill adds.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in the United Kingdom, where he will hold a series of meetings with British leaders and Ukrainian military officials.
As a reminder, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will meet with the new British Prime Minister Andy Burnham on July 27.
