Senator Fetterman joins Democrats’ letter on US elections — The Hill

In the United States, Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania joined a letter from Senate Democrats to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin. The document was signed by 34 members of the Democratic caucus. The lawmakers warned the official against actions that, in their view, could hinder voting in the midterm elections, The Hill reports.

Concerns over ICE agents

The lead signatory of the letter was Senator Gary Peters of Michigan, the leading Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security Committee. The authors of the appeal said that the activities of the US Department of Homeland Security could undermine the constitutional authority of Congress and the states to administer elections, as well as conflict with federal court rulings.

The letter was a response to Mullin’s statement earlier in September about the possible deployment of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel to polling places to respond to specific threats. According to the secretary, agents could be sent in the event of a threat to a polling place or to serve a warrant on a person they are seeking.

Demand for explanations

The Democrats asked Mullin to clarify under what circumstances and for what purpose ICE could be deployed to voting locations. They also criticized his July statement about an alleged 250,000 non-citizens of the United States registered to vote in four states, calling it unsupported by evidence.

In the letter, the lawmakers noted that Mullin initially said that 16,000 non-citizens had allegedly illegally registered to vote in Nevada. Later, other Department of Homeland Security officials revised that figure to 185. The senators demanded that the mentioned actions be stopped and that data underlying the statement of July 17, 2026, be provided.

Fetterman’s office said that the senator consistently emphasizes the security, integrity and accuracy of elections in the United States. He had previously signed Democrats’ letters criticizing initiatives to create a nationwide list of citizens to determine voting eligibility and to restrict voting by mail.
