U.S. Senator Accuses Trump of Aiding the Kremlin Through Sanctions Exemptions — NYT
The U.S. administration has come under a barrage of harsh criticism over its decision to temporarily suspend oil sanctions against the aggressor nation.
This was reported by The New York Times.
According to experts, this move allowed the Kremlin to significantly replenish its budget during the grace period.
Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal issued a sharp statement, calling the White House’s actions a “senseless mistake.”
In his view, the 30-day window in the sanctions regime effectively played into Moscow’s hands and weakened the allies’ position.
In the politician’s view, this decision appears to be an unwarranted political concession on Washington’s part.
“It looked as if he was rewarding Putin for providing Iran with valuable intelligence that allowed for more precise strikes against our troops,” the senator emphasized.
Blumenthal also added that this move was “one of the strangest and most senseless mistakes” the U.S. president has made.
Such a strategy is causing serious concern among lawmakers who advocate for maximum economic pressure on the aggressor.
According to The New York Times, the financial consequences of this temporary relaxation were staggering.
Russia was able to generate over $100 million in net revenue daily while the sanctions exemptions were in effect.
