Serbia plans to establish strike drone units

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced his intention to strengthen the country’s military capabilities by creating special units equipped with attack drones.

He made this announcement after a meeting with top military officials in Belgrade, Reuters reports.

According to the head of state, the plan involves forming units that will use both long-range strike drones and drones capable of remaining in the air over a target for an extended period before striking.

“In addition to increasing drone production, which I expect to rise sharply this year, we will focus significantly on the digitalization of our army. I believe that in this regard, we will become one of the armies with the highest operational interoperability and the greatest capabilities not only in our region but also beyond its borders,” Vucic emphasized.

As noted, the Serbian army has a strength of approximately 22,500 personnel. In 2026, the country allocated 3.3% of its gross domestic product to defense.

The initiative to create drone units is part of a broader strategy to modernize Serbia’s armed forces and adapt to modern warfare conditions.

Earlier, the president stated that Ukraine’s defense industry has the capacity to manufacture millions of FPV drones per year.
