Sheinbaum says the US is trying to divide her government
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that US officials are trying to weaken her government and create divisions within the government and the federal security cabinet. She said this on Wednesday during her morning press conference, Mexico News Daily reports.
Claims of interference
According to Sheinbaum, the United States allegedly uses such methods against independent governments that defend sovereignty. She said the US side seeks to “divide us from within,” but Mexico’s security cabinet is coordinated and united.
The president also linked recent statements by US officials about Mexico to the US midterm elections scheduled for November. According to her, US politicians often use Mexico in election campaigns.
The issue was raised after comments by US Drug Enforcement Administration Administrator Terry Cole about Mexico’s security minister, Omar García Harfuch. Sheinbaum rejected suggestions that such positive assessments could amount to support for García Harfuch in future elections and said that the United States allegedly seeks to influence Mexican elections.

Tensions in relations
Commenting on relations with Washington, Sheinbaum called them complicated, although she noted that Mexico seeks to maintain good relations with the United States. She mentioned tensions over US tariffs on Mexican steel and automobiles.
Sheinbaum also said that a US request to detain 10 current and former officials, including Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya, for subsequent extradition was an attempt to create tensions. According to the publication, the United States asked for these people to be detained for extradition in connection with a drug trafficking indictment case. At the same time, the president said that disagreements with the administration of US President Donald Trump had not caused a “major problem” for Mexico.
Response to rumors about López Obrador
Sheinbaum separately rejected claims of a split in the Morena party between supporters of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and her supporters. She said that López Obrador had been “extremely respectful” toward her government and had not told her what decisions to make. Sheinbaum called suggestions that the former president allegedly runs the country behind her back sexist.
