AI outperforms doctors in diagnosis — The Guardian

Artificial intelligence has demonstrated greater accuracy than doctors in diagnosing patients in emergency departments. These findings were revealed in a new study.

The Guardian reports this, citing a study by Harvard Medical School.

At the same time, experts emphasize that technological advancements can significantly change approaches in medicine, but are not capable of completely replacing doctors in the treatment and decision-making process.

The study analyzed 76 patient cases. AI was able to correctly or nearly correctly determine the diagnosis in 67% of cases, while doctors did so in only 50–55%. When the system was given more data, its accuracy rose to 82%, which is also higher than human performance.

In addition, artificial intelligence performed significantly better at developing treatment plans. In a test involving five clinical cases, it made 89% correct decisions, while doctors made only 34%.

The researchers explain that AI’s advantage is particularly evident in situations where decisions must be made quickly based on limited information. At the same time, it worked only with text data and did not take into account the patient’s physical condition, such as appearance or stress levels.

“I don’t think this means replacing doctors. But it shows a profound technological shift that will transform medicine,” said one of the study’s authors, Arjun Manrai.

Another author, Dr. Adam Rodman, noted that in the future, medicine may transition to a new model of collaboration: “doctor, patient, and artificial intelligence system.”

At the same time, experts emphasize that the technology is not yet ready to fully replace humans. Among the risks are potential errors, a lack of clear accountability, and the possibility that doctors may begin to rely too heavily on AI’s responses.

Researchers also emphasize that patients still want final treatment decisions to be made by humans, especially in complex and critical situations.
