Belgian prime minister’s chocolate gift for Modi damaged en route to India
A chocolate replica of the India Gate memorial, which Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever planned to give to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was damaged during transport to India. De Wever announced this at a joint press conference with Modi in New Delhi.
A symbolic gift
The sculpture was made of Belgian chocolate. De Wever joked that the real India Gate has stood for almost a century, while the chocolate version did not survive even the journey to India. He also noted that chocolate is well suited for diplomacy, but not for diplomatic transport.
As Politico Europe reports, the gift was intended to honor more than 9,000 Indian servicemen who fought and died in the Flanders fields in Belgium during World War I. India Gate in New Delhi is a war memorial.

A spare version in Belgium
According to De Wever, a spare version of the chocolate sculpture remained in Belgium. He promised to deliver it to the Indian prime minister undamaged.
During the meeting, De Wever and Modi also agreed to deepen cooperation in defense, combating organized crime, and developing renewable energy. The sides seek to increase trade, and the Belgian prime minister invited Modi to visit Belgium.
