A storm in Lithuania knocked down trees, damaged homes, and left 500 households without power
Heavy rain and storm-force winds in Lithuania over the weekend caused trees to fall, damaged homes, and flooded streets. Emergency and rescue services responded to 56 weather-related incidents, LRT reports, citing the Department of Fire and Rescue Services.
On Saturday, firefighters responded to 34 calls, and on Sunday, another 22. The Vilnius region accounted for the most calls, with 41. Near Vilnius, rescue workers cleared trees and large broken branches that had fallen onto parked cars. In one instance, a tree damaged a BMW.
In the Pašlaičiai district of Vilnius, residents were evacuated from homes that had become unsafe to live in after the storm. On Saturday evening, the wind tore off part of the rolled asphalt roofing from a two-story townhouse. Debris from the roof hung over the building’s entrance and blocked it. Rescuers removed the unstable section of the roof, partially cleared the entrance, and helped residents carry their belongings out. Three residents were accommodated in a hotel.

Part of the roof fell onto two cars: a Nissan Juke sustained significant damage, while a BMW sustained minor damage. The Varėna district in southern Lithuania also suffered significant damage, where winds tore roofs off residential and farm buildings and uprooted trees. Local fire crews cleared about 70 fallen trees overnight, most of which were blocking roads. Traffic on major highways has been restored.
According to the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service, thunderstorms in some parts of the country were accompanied by heavy rain and wind gusts of up to 15–16 meters per second. The municipal utility company Grinda in Vilnius received 116 reports of flooded streets and parking lots, open sewer manholes, blocked storm drains, and fallen trees. As of noon on Monday, about 500 households remained without power, and restoration work was ongoing.
