Switzerland has joined NATO's ammunition procurement mechanism

Switzerland has joined NATO's ammunition procurement mechanism

Switzerland has joined one of NATO’s mechanisms, which allows countries to jointly procure ammunition on more favorable terms. This decision is expected to improve the efficiency of supplying the army with the necessary weapons.

Participation in the mechanism will allow Switzerland to procure ammunition for various types of weapons at better prices through joint procurement with partner countries.

The Swiss Federal Office for Defense Procurement announced its accession to the Ammunition Support Partnership (ASP) mechanism, led by the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA), which provides access to over 2,000 types of ammunition for various weapons used by land, sea, and air forces.

As noted, participation in joint procurement will result in significant cost savings and shorter delivery times.

According to the communiqué, this step is in line with the Federal Council’s strategy on armaments and does not conflict with the country’s neutrality.

Switzerland has been cooperating with the NSPA since 1996; until now, the cooperation has focused on air defense systems and air-to-air missiles.
