New earthquakes have been recorded near Yellowstone in the U.S.: a major eruption may be imminent

A new earthquake with a magnitude of 3.3 was recorded near the Yellowstone supervolcano in the United States. In addition, an international team of researchers used artificial intelligence to detect approximately 86,000 previously unrecorded microearthquakes in the area of the national park.

According to the Daily Mail, the new tremor occurred on July 16 near the Yellowstone caldera. At the same time, researchers analyzed 15 years of seismic data and identified tens of thousands of weak earthquakes that had previously gone unnoticed.

Despite this, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) emphasizes that there are currently no signs of an imminent eruption. According to the researchers, volcanic gases continue to escape through geysers and hot springs, which reduces the risk of critical pressure building up underground.

Experts also note that Yellowstone’s three largest eruptions occurred approximately 2.08 million, 1.3 million, and 631,000 years ago. The average interval between them is about 725,000 years, but this does not mean that the next eruption can be predicted based on this pattern.

At the same time, the USGS has previously modeled the possible consequences of a large-scale eruption. According to the scenario, volcanic ash could spread over a significant portion of the United States, with the regions closest to the epicenter suffering the most damage.
