Survey: tourism and technology could improve China’s image in the US
In the United States, China could improve its image among the public by focusing on tourism, technology and the role of a responsible major power. This was the conclusion reached by researchers at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, with the South China Morning Post reporting on the survey results.
Assessments of China’s strengths
Respondents assessed China’s strengths on a scale from 1 to 5. The country’s global influence received the highest score — 4.38 points. This was followed by achievements in science and technology — 3.59 points — and higher education — 3.56 points.
The study’s authors noted that the concepts of decoupling economic ties and de-risking are appearing increasingly often in media coverage of China. At the same time, according to their conclusions, this has not completely offset positive perceptions of the country.

Role in international affairs
Many survey participants believed that China contributes to global peace, stability and governance. The researchers suggested that Beijing strengthen its image as a responsible major power, in particular by emphasizing its participation in UN peacekeeping missions, the fight against climate change and the provision of assistance.
The authors also pointed to the need to respond to misunderstandings and skepticism in international media through greater transparency and openness. According to their data, the American public shows strong interest in issues related to Hong Kong, Taiwan and Tibet.
