Sweden has warned of a possible provocation by Russia in the Baltic Sea to test NATO

Sweden has warned Denmark of the risk of a potential provocation by Russia in the Baltic Sea. This refers to a possible seizure of one of the islands to test the reaction of NATO countries and the Alliance’s unity.

This was reported by the Danish publication DR.

The focus is on the Baltic region, home to thousands of islands of various sizes, where the security situation remains tense amid Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Swedish Chief of Defense Michael Klasson stated that Russia could theoretically seize a small territory or island to assess NATO’s political and military response.

“I think the alliance can be challenged by seizing almost anything. It doesn’t have to be anything big. It’s more about a show of force and testing the political reaction,” he emphasized.

According to him, such tactics could become an element of hybrid pressure, allowing for a strategic effect without escalating to full-scale war.

At the same time, Danish Chief of Defense Michael Huldgaard stated that he currently has no information about Moscow’s specific plans regarding such a scenario.

“I am not aware of any Russian plans regarding such a scenario. For us, the primary focus is on cooperation within national and collective frameworks to demonstrate our readiness. We are capable of defending both Denmark and NATO as a whole, and that is precisely the strategic message we are sending to the world,” he said.

A report by the Danish Military Intelligence Service notes that the Baltic region is currently considered the area with the highest risk of Russia using military force against NATO.

Analysts believe that even a short-term occupation of a small territory could be used by the Kremlin as a way to test the speed and resolve of the Alliance’s response.

Michael Klasson also emphasized that a direct war between Russia and NATO currently seems unlikely, as Moscow is aware of the risk of defeat in an open military conflict.

Instead, in his assessment, a much more realistic scenario involves gradual escalation and hybrid actions that do not formally cross the line into full-scale war but exert serious pressure on Alliance countries.

Poland has decided to extend temporary border controls on its borders with Germany and Lithuania until October 1, 2026.

In Smolensk, Russia, provocations were staged against Poles who had come to commemorate the victims of the Smolensk plane crash on the 16th anniversary of the tragedy.
