Xi Jinping Will Demand That Trump Stop Selling Weapons to Taiwan – Reuters
During his upcoming meeting in Washington with U.S. President Donald Trump, Chinese leader Xi Jinping plans to call on the U.S. side to halt the sale and supply of weapons to Taiwan.
According to sources, Beijing is seeking to halt both new sales and previously ordered arms deliveries. Specifically, this refers to a $11 billion package approved in December and another $14 billion package that remains on hold. In return, China is offering to help exert pressure on Iran in connection with the war in the Middle East.
During the negotiations, the Chinese side intends to refer to the 1982 joint communiqué on reducing arms sales, although U.S. President Ronald Reagan emphasized that this depends on a peaceful resolution. The U.S. continues to adhere to the “One China” policy, but Trump previously called the suspended package “very good leverage for negotiations.”
