Latvia's Security Service is requesting that criminal proceedings be initiated over calls for the secession of Daugavpils
A week earlier, the Latvian State Security Service (VDD) had asked the prosecutor’s office to initiate criminal proceedings against a non-Latvian citizen. As reported by LSM English on August 17, the individual is suspected of supporting ideas directed against the country’s territorial integrity.
According to the VDD, the investigation revealed that this individual regularly promoted on TikTok the idea of separating Daugavpils from Latvia and creating a new republic. The agency also stated that the suspect disseminated such ideas through several social media accounts.

The TikTok account, which initially posted messages supporting the secession of Daugavpils, was deleted at the request of the VDD. The agency stated that the individual’s actions were classified under Part 1 of Article 81 of the Latvian Criminal Code—the dissemination of materials containing a public call to action against the territorial integrity of the republic in a manner not provided for by the Constitution.
According to the VDD, the individual was detained on May 12 and remains in custody as a precautionary measure. Non-citizens of Latvia are individuals who are under the protection of the state, have full residency rights, but have not been naturalized as Latvian citizens and do not have the right to vote. LSM English notes that approximately 159,000 people in the country hold this status.
