Singapore Parliament Speaker Seah Kian Peng apologized for falling asleep while presiding over a parliamentary sitting on September 9. Videos showing a parliamentary clerk trying to wake the speaker spread online, Channel NewsAsia reports.

The speaker’s explanation

In a Facebook post, Seah Kian Peng said that he had felt unwell that day and had taken medication. At the same time, he stressed that this did not excuse what happened.

According to the speaker, the incident did not meet the standards expected of the position. He took full responsibility for the situation.

A break during the sitting

Seah Kian Peng said that he fell asleep after four hours of the sitting. He acknowledged that he should have called a break earlier instead of continuing the sitting. He usually takes a break after four to six hours of work.

Seah Kian Peng has served as Speaker of Parliament since August 2023. He said that he would learn from the incident and take measures to prevent it from happening again.
