The case involving the Spanish prime minister's wife will be heard by a jury

A Spanish court has confirmed that the wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Begonia Gómez, will face a jury trial on charges of abuse of influence and embezzlement of public funds.

This type of trial is used in Spain only for a limited list of offenses. Gómez’s defense team attempted to have the case dismissed entirely by the High Court of Madrid, but the court upheld the majority of the charges.

The Madrid court partially granted the defense’s appeal, dismissing the charges against Begonia Gomez related to business corruption and embezzlement. The lower court’s ruling, which prohibited her from leaving the country and required her to surrender her passport, was also overturned. Despite this, two key charges remain in place, although the exact date for the start of the trial has not yet been set.

The office of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez reacted sharply to the court’s decision, calling the case politically motivated. The government emphasized that Begonia Gomez is innocent and that the investigation itself is based on false statements by a far-right organization whose sole aim is to persecute the head of government’s family.

This is reported by Reuters.

Begonia Gomez, the wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, is suspected of abuse of influence and corruption. A judge filed charges against her following a months-long investigation, which sparked a political scandal in the country. Gómez is set to stand trial.

On Sunday, February 8, 2026, regional elections in the Spanish region of Aragon ended in a major defeat for Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s Socialist Party.
