US and China: Huawei, AI and drones among seven SCMP review topics

In recent weeks, issues in US-China bilateral relations have included the Huawei trial, a discussion of containing the development of artificial general intelligence in China, restrictions on foreign drones, and Beijing's trade commitments. This is stated in a South China Morning Post review.

Huawei and artificial intelligence

Chinese technology company Huawei Technologies went on trial in Brooklyn, New York, in a criminal case after eight years of legal confrontation with the US government. The company faces charges related to racketeering.

A former White House official said the United States should prepare for scenarios involving extreme measures to prevent China from being the first to create artificial general intelligence. Among the options he proposed are state-backed espionage and military strikes on Chinese data centers.

The US Congress' advisory body on China reported that leading Chinese AI companies declined to meet with its representatives during a recent visit to Beijing. According to the commission, the companies feared that such contacts could expose them to the risk of US sanctions.

Migration, drones and trade

The Chinese-American community expressed outrage and concern on September 3 following the death of a Chinese citizen in the custody of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The incident occurred amid concerns about the profiling of Chinese people.

US lawmakers raised issues concerning China and so-called birth tourism during hearings on birthright citizenship. The US Supreme Court upheld the constitutional right to such citizenship in June, but President Donald Trump's administration continues to challenge it.

A US proposal to restrict foreign drones has raised concerns among American police and farmers. Arizona drone operator trainer Greg Reverdío said that approximately 98% of the 3,800 comments on the proposal were against it or included reservations.

The Trump administration also said that China is moving toward fulfilling its commitments to purchase US agricultural products. The agricultural issue is expected to become one of the key topics of talks between Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington later this month.
