The United States and Saudi Arabia have signed an agreement on cooperation in the civilian nuclear sector
The United States and Saudi Arabia have reached a multibillion-dollar agreement on cooperation in the field of civil nuclear energy. This was reported by France 24. The agreement was signed by U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Energy, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman.
The parties also concluded a separate bilateral safeguards agreement. France 24 did not provide any further details regarding the content of the agreements in its report.
Negotiations on nuclear cooperation between Washington and Riyadh have been ongoing for years, particularly under the Biden administration. At the time, they were viewed as part of a broader agreement under which Saudi Arabia was to normalize relations with Israel.
This process stalled following the attacks on October 7. France 24 notes that the new agreement could draw objections from U.S. allies and those with security concerns.
