US pledges to defend Qatar against "any attack"

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order pledging to guarantee Qatar’s security and to treat any attack on the Gulf state as a threat to the “peace and security of the United States.” The move comes just three weeks after Israel launched a missile strike on Doha, sparking concerns among Washington’s Gulf allies.

Qatar is a longstanding US ally, hosting the largest American military base in the region, holding major investments in US assets, and serving as a top exporter of liquefied natural gas. Trump emphasized that Washington is prepared to use diplomatic, economic, and, if necessary, military measures to defend the interests of both the US and Qatar.

Analysts described the step as unprecedented, equating it to the defense commitments the US maintains with treaty allies like Japan and South Korea. However, experts caution that inflated expectations in Doha could lead to tensions, since the actual weight of this commitment will depend on future White House actions.
