Germany plans to build its first fusion reactor — Merz

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced the government’s ambitious plans for the future of energy.

During a visit to the Hannover Fair alongside Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, he stated that the country aims to be the first in the world to connect a fusion reactor to the grid.

The German government has officially included fusion research on its strategic list of priorities—the “Hightech-Agenda.”

According to the chancellor, the successful implementation of this project will be a true revolution in the field of energy production and supply, providing the country with a stable resource.

During the tour of the exhibition, particular attention was drawn to an exhibit that is the “heart” of the future facility.

Friedrich Merz emphasized that this technology will allow for the independent production of the necessary fuel—tritium—which is critical for the operation of such plants.

“There, we will one day be able to produce fusion fuel—tritium. This is a major breakthrough. The federal government’s goal is to help this fusion technology achieve such a breakthrough that we can build a power plant based on it,” noted German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
