Starmer rejected calls for his resignation amid political instability in Britain
The British Prime Minister has assured the government that he will continue to lead the country despite the pressure following the Labour Party’s significant defeat in the election. Starmer emphasized that the past two days have destabilized the government and are already having real economic consequences for the country and British families.
This was reported by Reuters.
During a Cabinet meeting, the head of government acknowledged his responsibility for the election results but stressed that the formal procedure to replace the party leader had not been initiated. A number of loyal officials, including Labor Minister Pat McPhadden, expressed their public support for him, noting that no one present at the meeting had challenged the Prime Minister.
At the same time, British media are reporting a rift within the government: Health Secretary Wes Streeting and Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, who are considered supporters of Starmer’s resignation, refrained from commenting after the meeting. The Prime Minister urged his colleagues to focus on fulfilling their duties to the country, emphasizing that the public expects stable leadership during this difficult period.
On Tuesday, May 12, another junior member of the British government resigned and called on Prime Minister Keir Starmer to step down as leader of the Labour Party. The decision was made after the party suffered electoral losses in last week’s elections.
Already, 41 Labour Party MPs have publicly called on UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to step down as party leader.
Earlier, Starmer spoke of growing tensions in relations with the U.S.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, during which they discussed increasing pressure on the aggressor. The leaders paid particular attention to the fight against the Russian shadow fleet and London’s contributions to the PURL program to strengthen the Ukrainian army.
