Stubb said that talks between the EU and Russia might take place in the near future
Finnish President Alexander Stubb stated that Europe could resume dialogue with Russia as early as the coming weeks. He emphasized that informal and diplomatic signals are currently being observed that may indicate a gradual resumption of contacts.
According to him, key European countries are already discussing possible formats for the negotiation process, which may also involve Ukraine in the future.
Alexander Stubb stated that there are cautious signs in European political circles of a willingness to resume dialogue with Russia, although this process remains complex and highly sensitive. He emphasized that, alongside official positions, informal contacts continue to exist between certain diplomatic circles that support the exchange of signals at the EU level.
The President of Finland noted that Ukraine is currently in a stronger position than in previous periods of the war, which, in his view, influences the overall balance of discussions in Europe. At the same time, he pointed out that the United States is currently focused on other international challenges, particularly the situation surrounding Iran, which is partially shifting the global focus.
Stubb emphasized that Europe must return to discussing the format of future dialogue if it seeks to influence the region’s security architecture. In this context, he mentioned the possibility of creating a working group involving key European countries, including Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and one of the neighboring states, such as Poland.
He also noted that any resumption of contacts must take into account the long-term consequences and the direction of Russia’s future foreign policy. According to him, dialogue will sooner or later have to be resumed both at the pan-European level and within the framework of bilateral relations between individual countries, including Finland.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb stated the need for European leaders to immediately begin diplomatic negotiations with the Russian leadership. During an official briefing, the head of state emphasized that Ukraine is currently in a strong and advantageous position to launch such a process.
