US student reports threats after asking candidate about IRGC — Jerusalem Post

Iranian-American University of Michigan student Iman Dashti said he faced online threats, doxxing and harassment after asking US Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed at a public meeting whether he condemns Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Dashti spoke about this in a video published on Instagram. According to him, after this conversation he was threatened, his friends were doxxed, and members of his family were harassed. The Jerusalem Post reports that El-Sayed and Dashti had not responded to requests for comment by the time of publication.

Question about the IRGC

During the event, Dashti spoke about his family’s experience under the Iranian regime. He said that his cousin was harassed on the streets by IRGC representatives, while his uncle was sentenced to death and 50 lashes.

The student asked El-Sayed to state unequivocally that he opposes the IRGC and the Islamic Republic of Iran. He also mentioned an earlier controversy over the candidate’s comments regarding the death of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In response, El-Sayed criticized US foreign policy and warned against regime-change operations involving the United States. According to him, democratic reforms should come from the people of Iran rather than military intervention.

Online reaction

Dashti said that internet users called him a “Zionist agent” and asked whether he works for Mike Rogers’ election campaign. The student said he is a conservative Christian, a member of the College Republicans, and knows Rogers, but denied working for anyone. At the same time, he called El-Sayed’s response to his question unsatisfactory.
