A court in Dagestan has sentenced a former member of the Russian State Duma to life in prison in absentia

The Supreme Court of Dagestan has sentenced former State Duma deputy Magomed Gadzhiev to life imprisonment in a maximum-security prison in absentia.

The former Russian official was found guilty of organizing a high-profile double murder and large-scale extortion as part of a criminal group.

His biological brother, who also held high-ranking government positions in the region, received the same sentence.

The judicial authorities of the Republic of Dagestan have officially confirmed the sentencing of the defendants in this high-profile case.

In addition to the maximum prison term, Magomed Gadzhiev was ordered to pay a large fine.

The court sentenced Hajiyev’s brother, Ahmed Hajiyev—the former CEO of the Makhachkala Sea Trade Port and a deputy of the People’s Assembly of Dagestan—in absentia to ten years in prison with a similar fine.

The investigation proved that the relatives jointly used their positions of power to carry out criminal plans and eliminate competitors. Currently, both convicted individuals are outside the territory of the Russian Federation.

According to the investigation materials, Magomed Gadzhiev, through intermediaries, planned and organized the brutal murder of the head of a religious educational institution—the rector of the Institute of Theology, Maksud Sadikov.

The well-known religious figure was shot on the evening of June 7, 2011, in the republic’s capital, Makhachkala. His nephew, who was with him, was also killed during the attack.

In addition to organizing the political assassination, the influential brothers were involved in common criminal raiding activities in Dagestan.

Investigative authorities established that the Gadzhievs devised and successfully carried out a plan to illegally seize a controlling stake in the commercial company “Sudoremont.”

To pressure the businessmen, they mobilized their entire administrative apparatus and law enforcement agencies.
