June 27 Holiday: The World Celebrates ATM Day

June 27 Holiday: The World Celebrates ATM Day

Every year on June 27, the world commemorates the day that marked the beginning of one of the most useful inventions in the financial sector—the ATM. It was on this day in 1967 that a machine capable of dispensing cash without a teller was installed for the first time at a British bank. Since then, ATMs have radically transformed the banking system and become a familiar part of daily life for millions of people.

June 27, 1967, is considered the birthday of the ATM. It was on this day that the first cash dispenser began operating at a branch of the British bank Barclays in the Enfield area of northern London. At the time, it was a true revolution. For the first time, people were able to withdraw money even after the bank had closed. Today this seems like a matter of course, but nearly 60 years ago, such technology seemed like science fiction.

The man who really invented the cash machine - BBC News

The inventor was British engineer John Shepherd-Barron. According to legend, the idea came to him after he missed the bank’s closing time and was unable to withdraw cash. That same day, he noticed a chocolate vending machine and thought: if a machine can dispense chocolate, why can’t it dispense money? It was this simple thought that led to the creation of the ATM.

The story behind the world's first cashpoint

It took several months to develop the new device. It cost approximately $18,000, which was a huge sum in the late 1960s. The first ATM did not yet work with plastic cards as we know them today. Instead, it used special paper vouchers impregnated with a low-level radioactive substance. Each voucher allowed the user to withdraw only 10 pounds sterling. The first person to use the new machine was the popular British actor and comedian Reg Warney. He was specially invited to the ATM’s grand opening. It was the photos of Warney standing next to the new machine that made headlines in British newspapers and became a symbol of the dawn of a new era in banking services.

Interestingly, the famous PIN code, which every bank cardholder knows today, also has an intriguing history. Initially, John Shepherd-Barron wanted to create a six-digit code. But his wife admitted that she could easily remember only four. That is why the inventor shortened the code to four digits. Over time, this format became an international standard and is used by most banks around the world.

The evolution of the ATM | American Banker

Over the years, ATMs have changed significantly. While the first models only dispensed cash, modern machines allow users to deposit money, pay utility bills, transfer funds, change their PIN, print statements, and even access certain banking services. In many countries, you can receive government benefits or access additional financial services through an ATM.

Manufacturers pay special attention to security. Modern ATMs are equipped with special anti-tampering systems. They can withstand very strong mechanical impacts, and in the event of a robbery attempt, a special system instantly coats the banknotes with indelible ink. Such money becomes unusable, which significantly complicates matters for criminals.

What is an ATM? Understanding Automated Teller Machines

Despite the rapid growth of cashless payments, ATMs remain an important part of the financial system. They are especially needed in small towns, villages, or during emergencies, when access to other payment methods may be limited. In many countries, banks continue to install new, modern terminals, even though people are increasingly conducting transactions via mobile apps.

Different Types of ATMs for Business

No official celebrations are held on this day, but June 27 is often mentioned in historical retrospectives, with interesting facts about the development of banking technologies being published, and financial institutions sharing stories about the evolution of their services. For bank employees, this is another opportunity to reflect on an invention that has fundamentally changed the way the entire industry operates.

What Is a Cardless ATM?

Over nearly six decades, the ATM has gone from a large experimental machine to a familiar device that can be found in virtually every city in the world. Today, it’s hard to imagine everyday life without the ability to quickly withdraw or deposit money into an account at any time of day. And all of this became possible thanks to an idea that was born next to an ordinary candy vending machine. “If a vending machine can dispense candy, why can’t it dispense money?”—it was this very thought by John Shepherd-Barron that marked the beginning of the ATM’s history.
