June 4 Holiday: Corgi Day is celebrated around the world

How This Holiday Came to Be

The history of International Corgi Day began quite recently. The holiday was launched in 2019 by a few friends from the U.S. who adored this breed. They decided to create a special day dedicated to Corgis to draw attention to these dogs and, at the same time, support charitable organizations that help animals.

At first, it was a small local initiative. But thanks to social media, it quickly became popular far beyond the borders of America. With each passing year, more and more people joined in the celebration. Today, International Corgi Day is a global event for thousands of owners and millions of fans of this breed.

Why have Corgis become so popular?

The secret to the Corgi’s popularity is quite simple. They have a very distinctive appearance: short legs, a long body, large ears, and a constant smile on their face. But appearance is only part of the story. Corgis are considered very intelligent dogs. They learn quickly, easily remember commands, and get along well with people.

This breed is also known for its temperament. Corgis are friendly, active, cheerful, and very devoted to their owners. Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain played a special role in the breed’s popularity. It was she who made corgis true stars. During her lifetime, the Queen owned more than 30 dogs of this breed. Because of this, for many people, Corgis have become a symbol of the British monarchy. “Corgis have become as recognizable as the Queen herself,” British journalists joked.

Where do Corgis come from?

The homeland of the Corgi is Wales. The breed’s history spans hundreds of years. Some historians believe that the ancestors of modern Corgis appeared in Britain over a thousand years ago. Initially, these dogs were used as herders.

Despite their small size, corgis were excellent at handling large herds of livestock. They would nip at the cows’ legs, forcing them to move in the desired direction, and at the same time, thanks to their short stature, they easily avoided being kicked by the hooves. Interestingly, corgis belong to the herding dog family, although they do not look at all like traditional herding dogs.

Types of Corgis

Many people believe that Corgis are a single breed. In fact, there are two varieties:

  • Welsh Corgi Pembroke;
  • Welsh Corgi Cardigan.

It is the Pembrokes that are most often seen in photographs of Queen Elizabeth II. Cardigans are usually slightly larger, have a longer tail, and a slightly different ear shape. However, both breeds are very similar in temperament and remain extremely popular among dog lovers.

How Corgi Day is celebrated

The main feature of this holiday is an atmosphere of joy and positivity. In many cities, Corgi owners organize group walks and gatherings in parks. Sometimes dozens or even hundreds of dogs gather at such events at once. To passersby, it looks like a real parade of short legs. Also, on Corgi Day, the following are often held:

  • dog shows;
  • charity events;
  • photo contests;
  • themed festivals;
  • fundraisers for shelters.

Many owners buy their pets new toys or treats, or simply spend more time walking and playing with them. On this day, social media turns into a real corgi festival. Owners post photos, videos, and stories about their four-legged friends.

Fun facts about Corgis

Corgis can run at speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour. Despite their short legs, they are very active and resilient. The name “corgi” comes from the Welsh language. It is believed that the word can be translated as “dwarf dog.”

Corgis are excellent swimmers, although due to their unique body structure, many people don’t even realize this. In 2007, corgis became so popular in the UK that they were named one of the country’s most famous national breeds. Some Corgis have their own social media pages with hundreds of thousands of followers. Due to their popularity, this breed regularly appears in movies, cartoons, commercials, and even video games.

Corgi Day and Helping Animals

For many people, this holiday is not just an excuse to admire cute dogs. On this day, charity fundraisers are often held for shelters and organizations dedicated to animal rescue. Volunteers remind us that the breed’s popularity should not lead to uncontrolled breeding or impulsive purchases.
