The Serbian Security and Information Agency (BIA) has advised President Aleksandar Vučić to refrain from traveling to Montenegro on June 5. A summit involving leaders from the EU and Balkan countries is scheduled to take place there, but the agency cited potential security threats as the reason for the warning.

Late Wednesday evening, the BIA stated that Vucic’s trip to Montenegro poses a high security risk due to “hostile activities by foreign intelligence services and the presence of a criminal clan there.”

On Friday, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are scheduled to arrive in the Montenegrin coastal city of Tivat to meet with the leaders of six Western Balkan countries and discuss their progress toward EU membership.

Serbian Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabić stated that Vučić had planned to attend the summit and hold a series of meetings despite warnings from intelligence agencies.

The warning came after Montenegro turned back a plane carrying 87 Serbian citizens that had landed in Tivat on Wednesday. Podgorica stated that the passengers on the flight posed a security threat ahead of the EU-Western Balkans summit.

According to media reports, some of the passengers were supposed to carry out “informal security” tasks for the Serbian president during his stay in Tivat.

On Wednesday evening, Serbia introduced stricter border controls with Montenegro, leading to long lines at border crossings.

Relations between the two countries have deteriorated due to Podgorica’s ties with Kosovo, as well as Belgrade’s influence on domestic political issues through the church and political forces linked to Vucic’s party.

This was reported by Reuters.
