World in photos: rescue from a tunnel in Nepal and the Bayeux Tapestry in London
In Nepal’s Rasuwa district, the military rescued a worker who had spent nine days in a tunnel connected to a hydropower plant. He had been trapped there after a deadly landslide and flash floods. The image was included in a selection of the week’s photographs published by The National.

In Kathmandu, relatives of people still considered missing after the floods held symbolic funerals. In accordance with Nepalese Hindu rites, they cremated effigies. In Indonesia, firefighters worked at the site of a major fire at a landfill in the city of Solo, Central Java province.
Also in Indonesia, a male orangutan received assistance during a rescue operation. It was found unconscious on a palm oil plantation; the animal had difficulty breathing because of smoke from forest fires. In South Korea’s Yeongcheon, near the demilitarized zone between the two Koreas, a sunflower festival dedicated to reunification took place.
In Kyrgyzstan, during the 6th World Nomad Games in the Kychin Gorge, a participant in a traditional hunting competition released a trained golden eagle. In China’s Qingdao, fishing boats went out to sea with the start of the autumn fishing season after a four-month summer moratorium.

American actresses and sisters Rooney Mara and Kate Mara were photographed at the Venice International Film Festival. The band Florence And The Machine performed at Leeds Festival in Leeds, while American singer and songwriter Kelis performed at the Victorious festival in Portsmouth.
Other photographs include a young Iraqi diving into the Shatt al-Arab in Basra during intense summer heat, as well as onion harvesting in fields near Mateur in northern Tunisia. In Putrajaya, performers waved Malaysian flags during celebrations of the country’s 69th National Day.
In London, French President Emmanuel Macron and King Charles III of the United Kingdom attended a preview event for the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition at the British Museum. The selection also includes a photo of a Palestinian inspecting his home in Burqa in the occupied West Bank after attacks by Israeli settlers, as well as images from Austria and the US Open in New York.
