Typhoon Saudel triggers mass evacuation in southeastern China
Typhoon Saudel brought several days of heavy rain to the provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian and Guangdong in southeastern China. In Fujian province, nearly 600,000 people were evacuated from flood-prone danger zones. Another 128,000 residents in 53 counties of Jiangxi province were affected by the disaster, while 9,000 people were evacuated on an emergency basis.
Heavy rainfall and flooding
In the city of Putian in Fujian province, 416.5 mm of precipitation fell over 24 hours between Thursday and Friday. More than 500 mm of rain was recorded in nearby villages over the same period, The Guardian reports.
Flooding, landslides and infrastructure damage were reported in the region. On Wednesday, more than 2,500 teachers and students in the city of Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, were trapped on school grounds after flash floods in low-lying areas caused by extreme rainfall.

Destruction and casualties
In Putian, at least 1,260 people reportedly needed rescue after a river dam collapsed on Thursday. The collapse destroyed 100 homes. On Saturday, a landslide in a village in Suichuan County, Jiangxi province, killed three people, while another nine are considered missing.
Saudel became the seventh typhoon to affect China this year. It came after Typhoon Narra, which brought heavy rain to Guangdong province as well as Hainan and Guangxi at the end of the previous month.
