Thousands rally in ‘Hands Off Greenland’ protests

Thousands of people took to the streets in Denmark and Greenland to protest US President Donald Trump’s repeated threats to take control of the self-governing territory of Greenland.

In Copenhagen, demonstrators gathered outside city hall, waving Danish and Greenlandic flags and chanting “Kalaallit Nunaat,” the island’s name in Greenlandic. Similar rallies were held in Aarhus, Aalborg, Odense, and in Greenland’s capital, Nuuk.

Protesters said the issue goes beyond regional politics and touches on core principles of democracy, self-determination and international law. Activists warned that the world must pay attention to the risks posed by coercive approaches to Greenland’s future.

The demonstrations came amid Trump’s announcement of planned trade tariffs against European countries opposing US control over the island, with warnings that the measures could escalate if no agreement is reached.

Denmark and Greenland’s authorities have repeatedly stressed that the territory is not for sale and that only Greenlanders have the right to decide their future. Opinion polls indicate that an overwhelming majority of Greenland’s population opposes joining the United States.

Despite this, continued pressure from Washington has raised concerns within NATO and heightened fears about growing instability in the Arctic region.
