Trump criticizes allies for their reluctance to help in the war with Iran
Trump once again stated that the U.S. must rethink its membership in NATO. The president criticized allies for not helping in the war against Iran, even though everyone agrees that the country should not acquire nuclear weapons. He emphasized that the US has committed to helping its allies but has not received reciprocal support, CNN reports.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the United States must reconsider its NATO membership due to its allies’ unwillingness to assist in the war against Iran. “NATO membership is certainly something we need to think about,” Trump said during a briefing at the White House. According to him, the U.S. has helped its allies, particularly during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but has not received reciprocal support. “We help them, but they don’t help us, and I think that’s very bad for NATO,” the president emphasized.
Trump noted that allies support the U.S. goal of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, but do not want to be directly involved in combat operations. “No one wants Iran to have nuclear weapons because these people are crazy. They’re brutal, violent,” Trump said. “Everyone agrees with this, but no one wants to help.”
He added that the U.S. has taken note of this, though it does not plan to impose sanctions on NATO. “I just think it’s bad for the partnership when they say, ‘What you’re doing is a great thing, but we’re not going to help,’” Trump explained.
Analysts note that Trump’s rhetoric highlights tensions in U.S. relations with Western allies and calls into question the effectiveness of NATO’s collective defense in modern global conflicts.
