Trump Expects U.S.-Colombia Relations to Improve After the Election
U.S. President Donald Trump said he is counting on “much better relations” with Colombia following the presidential election, in which right-wing candidate Abelardo de la Esprieya is leading according to preliminary results.
Trump supported de la Esprieylla during the campaign and called his future presidency “wonderful for Colombia.” Meanwhile, his rival, Iván Cepeda, has not yet conceded defeat and is awaiting the completion of the vote count.
Abelardo de la Esprieya has promised to step up the fight against drug cartels, supported the creation of a regional alliance with the U.S. against organized crime, and stated his intention to allow the establishment of U.S. military bases in Colombia.
