Trump Praises AfD's Success in Saxony-Anhalt Election

US President Donald Trump praised the success of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the state election in Saxony-Anhalt in eastern Germany. As YLE News reports, the party won nearly 44% of the vote in Sunday’s election.

Trump’s statement

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said it was a “big night” for the AfD. He also wrote that the party’s supporters were fed up with, in his words, immigration rules and regulations that had allegedly caused significant damage to Germany.

The US president added that the AfD was “on the rise” and that its supporters no longer intended to put up with it. In the post, he also used the abbreviation MGGA, which refers to the MAGA — Make America Great Again — movement. According to YLE News, Trump likely formed the acronym from the phrase Make Germany Great Again.

AfD programme

Germany’s domestic intelligence service has classified the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt as a right-wing extremist movement. During the election campaign, the party, among other things, promised to begin mass deportations of people who had entered the country illegally.

Among the AfD’s other election promises are a ban on rainbow flags representing sexual and gender minorities in schools, the use of the German flag instead, and the performance of the national anthem. The party also seeks to expand Russian-language teaching, launch student exchanges with Russia, and opposes providing aid to Ukraine.
