Trump commented on Starmer's possible successor

U.S. President Donald Trump commented on former Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who is considered a likely successor to Keir Starmer following Starmer’s announcement of his resignation.

During a press conference in the Oval Office with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump called Burnham “extremely liberal.” The U.S. president suggested that Starmer’s successor would not open the North Sea to oil drilling, something the British government has long been urging.

“I’ve heard that he’s extremely liberal—extremely—and that means he probably won’t open up the North Sea,” Trump said.

When asked what he knew about Bernham, the U.S. president replied that he had heard “that he was, apparently, the mayor of some city.”

At the press conference, Trump once again criticized his NATO allies, particularly London, stating that “Britain is dying.”

The next British prime minister is expected to face a rocky relationship with the U.S. president. Burnam has previously criticized Trump, calling U.S. politics “polarized” and “toxic” during the election campaign in Makerfield this month, according to The Guardian.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted to the announcement of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s resignation, expressing his gratitude to Starmer for his cooperation and support of Ukraine.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer informed his staff of his final decision to resign.

Within the UK Labour Party, talk has been intensifying about a possible leadership change and the potential resignation of Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is considered the leading contender to replace him.
