Trump spoke with Putin by phone about Ukraine and Iran
On Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump held a lengthy telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which they discussed ending the war in Ukraine and preparing international security agreements.
The American leader once again called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and expressed his intention to use diplomatic tools to influence the Ukrainian government and the United States’ European partners.
The conversation between the heads of state took place on the day of the U.S. president’s 80th birthday, with the Russian leader being the first among foreign leaders to congratulate him on the occasion.
Yuri Ushakov, an adviser to the Russian president, revealed details of the diplomatic contact to journalists.
According to his official data, the direct conversation between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin lasted exactly 55 minutes and covered a wide range of geopolitical issues.
The leaders discussed the current situation on the front lines in detail and outlined the conditions for possible future negotiations.
During the conversation, the Russian dictator reiterated the Kremlin’s traditional propaganda talking points regarding strikes on Russian territory and set forth conditions for a meeting with Ukrainian leadership.
“Putin told Trump that no attempts by Kyiv to strike civilian infrastructure in Russia will change the situation on the battlefield,” Russian media quoted the adviser as saying.
In addition, the Russian leader confirmed to Trump that if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wants a meeting, he should come to Moscow.
An important topic of the talks was coordinating future visits by U.S. officials to the Russian capital to continue the bilateral track.
Putin and Trump agreed that U.S. representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would visit Russia again in the near future.
The Kremlin leader also decided to separately highlight the humanitarian initiatives of the U.S. First Lady, stating that he “highly appreciated Melania Trump’s role in reuniting Russian and Ukrainian children with their families.”
