Trump Spoke About His Talks with Putin and Zelenskyy
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he had allegedly had another conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, and subsequently spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. However, neither Kyiv nor Moscow has yet confirmed these contacts.
Responding to journalists’ questions about a possible end to Russia’s war against Ukraine, the U.S. leader said he had had a “very good conversation” with Putin the day before. “I had a very good conversation with President Putin. We had a long conversation yesterday; it went on for quite a while. And I also spoke with President Zelenskyy right after that,” Trump said.
According to him, he believes that both Moscow and Kyiv are allegedly interested in reaching agreements. “I think they both want a deal. It’s too bad it’s taken so long, but I think something will come of it,” the U.S. president said.
Trump also reiterated his position that he has experience in reaching international agreements and sees an opportunity to end the war. “I know a lot about deals. And I think we’ll work this out—hopefully soon,” he said. At the same time, information about such talks has not been confirmed by official sources. Neither the Ukrainian authorities nor Kremlin representatives reported a new conversation between the leaders and Trump on July 6.
A subsequent fact-check revealed that the conversation with Zelenskyy claimed by Trump did not take place on that day. There is also no confirmation of a new phone call between Trump and Putin. It is currently unknown whether he was referring to a different conversation or whether the U.S. president made a mistake during his public statement.
Trump’s meeting with Zelenskyy is expected to take place on the sidelines of the NATO summit. The parties had previously stated that the main topics of the talks would be support for Ukraine, strengthening defense, and further steps to end the war. Trump mentioned this during a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in the public portion of the event.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that, in his opinion, the presidents of Ukraine and Russia want to reach an agreement to end the war. He made this statement before the start of his meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
