Trump has temporarily avoided paying $83 million in the Carroll case

A U.S. appeals court has allowed Donald Trump to temporarily suspend payment of $83 million in damages to writer E. Jean Carroll in a defamation case. The ruling is interim, so the legal battle between the parties continues and could drag on for several more months.

This was reported with reference to the Associated Press.

According to the ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit, Trump will not be required to pay the damages until the Supreme Court agrees to hear his appeal or denies it.

At the same time, the court partially granted Carroll’s request and ordered the U.S. president to post a bond of $7.4 million to cover potential additional interest.

Late last month, the appeals court had already denied Trump’s request for an emergency review of the decision by the full court. Following that, the U.S. president’s attorney, Justin Smith, asked to stay the judgment until the Supreme Court decides whether to take the case.

According to Smith, there is a “real possibility” that the Supreme Court will side with Trump. The U.S. president himself has previously called Carroll’s allegations a “fabricated hoax.”

Trump stated that the U.S. does not need help on the issue of Iran.
