Trump to consider request to declassify 9/11 materials in Ireland
US President Donald Trump in Shannon, Ireland, said he would consider a request from families of victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks to declassify and release materials that may shed light on Saudi Arabia’s alleged role in the attacks. Fortune reports, citing the Associated Press.
Trump’s statement in Ireland
Before boarding Air Force One to return to Washington after a weekend in Ireland, Trump told reporters that he would consider the matter after returning. According to him, the families approached him with this request on Friday.
Relatives of those killed are asking the president to declassify and release the relevant records. Some families have long maintained that a group of extremist religious leaders in Saudi Arabia gained influence in the country’s government and helped the plane hijackers.

The families’ legal battle
Fifteen of the 19 plane hijackers were Saudi Arabian nationals. At the same time, the Saudi Arabian government has long denied any involvement in the attacks.
Relatives of the victims have been engaged in a lengthy legal battle against Saudi Arabia. Terry Strada, who lost her husband Tom Strada in the September 11 attacks, called on Trump at a memorial event in New York on Friday to demand that the Saudis stop lying.
Strada also said that US presidents had chosen to protect Saudi Arabia instead of supporting the victims’ families. She called on the current administration to support the families of those killed and the survivors.
