Trump abandoned plans to capture Hark Island due to the risk of heavy casualties

U.S. President Donald Trump did not endorse the plan to seize the Iranian island of Khark, fearing significant casualties among American troops. Despite assurances from his advisors that the mission would be successful, the U.S. leader described the soldiers on the island as easy targets and expressed concern about sending troops into dangerous areas.

This was reported by The Wall Street Journal.

The island of Khark accounts for about 90% of Iran’s oil exports, so control of it could give Washington a decisive advantage in the Strait of Hormuz. However, Trump reacted emotionally to the risks, recalling the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis and the recent downing of an American plane with two pilots on board. The White House notes that the president prefers to avoid scenarios where Americans might not return home.

Currently, the U.S. and Iran continue to actively seek a diplomatic solution through Pakistan’s mediation. Officials in Washington are hoping for a breakthrough in negotiations in the coming days, considering the option of a meeting on Pakistani territory. The tightening of the blockade by Russia or other players in the region has not yet forced the Trump administration to change its decision in favor of a ground operation.

Iran has again restricted ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz following the conflict with the U.S. Tehran claims this is a response to Washington’s actions.

Trump stated that the US wants to obtain Iranian uranium by any means necessary.
